How many times can teak be restored?
More often than most owners assume. A careful refinish removes a fraction of a millimetre, and typical furniture stock has several millimetres of sound material to give before dimensions or joinery are affected.
The limiting factor is never the number of restorations; it is how aggressive each one was. Pressure washing and heavy belt sanding take more material in one visit than a decade of correct maintenance coats.
This is the practical reason to keep to a schedule. Pieces maintained on time need light work each cycle, and light work can be repeated almost indefinitely.
Four stages of teak weathering
Knowing which stage you are at makes the estimate conversation much shorter, and often much cheaper than expected.
Stage 1 — Dulling
Colour flattening, water still beading. A clean and a maintenance coat is enough.
Stage 2 — Silvering
Grey across exposed faces, surface still smooth. Clean, light sand, refinish.
Stage 3 — Erosion
Rough texture, raised grain, some spotting. Full multi-grit sanding, then protection rebuilt.
Stage 4 — Neglect
Deep staining, checking, loose joints. Still usually restorable, but budget for carpentry.
Teak Restoration Along the Fairways of Rancho Bernardo

Ipe and dense hardwoods
Very hard and tight-grained. They take finish sparingly, so preparation matters more than product.
Mahogany and sapele
Rich colour, less naturally durable outdoors. Benefits from a film-forming protective finish.
Cedar and redwood
Soft and light. Gentle sanding only, since aggressive prep removes far more than intended.
Exterior doors and trim
Vertical, high-visibility surfaces where finish failure shows first at the top rail and sill.
Hand-finished
Every grain inspected, sanded and sealed by a master craftsman.

Scope and photograph
We record the condition of each piece before work starts, so the before-and-after is documented rather than described.
- 02
Mask and contain
Stone, glass, pool coping and planting are covered. Teak dust is fine and travels, so containment is set up before any abrasive runs.
- 03
Strip what is failing
Old varnish and film finishes come off chemically. Sanding through a failed film only drives it deeper into the grain.
- 04
Level and refine
Coarse work flattens eroded early-wood, then finer passes close the grain without burnishing it shut.
- 05
Feed the wood
Oil goes on until the wood stops taking it, then the excess is wiped off within the working window.
- 06
Cure and return
We leave the pieces to cure, then come back to buff any raised grain and reset your furniture layout.
