Teak Restoration Del Mar

Teak Restoration for Del Mar's Coastal Character

Del Mar packs a lot of variety into a small footprint — beachfront cottages along the sand, bluff-top homes with sweeping ocean views, and larger properties further inland near the racetrack and fairgrounds. Each setting puts different demands on outdoor teak furniture, and we adjust our restoration approach accordingly.

Beachfront teak here deals with direct salt spray and blowing sand, a combination that can create fine surface abrasion in addition to the usual UV graying. We often find sand embedded in the grain of chaise lounges and dining tables closest to the shoreline, which needs to be fully cleared before any sanding or refinishing begins.

Bluff-top homes, meanwhile, get less direct sand exposure but more sustained wind, which dries out teak's natural oils faster and can lead to more pronounced surface checking if pieces go too long between treatments.

Further inland, in neighborhoods nearer the Del Mar Fairgrounds and racetrack, homes see less salt exposure but still deal with the region's strong summer sun, and here we typically see teak that's faded in tone more than it's structurally weathered.

Whether it's a beachfront lounge set, a bluff-top dining table, or inland patio furniture, our restoration happens entirely at your property, matching the finish to the specific exposure that piece deals with day to day.

Beachfront teak in Del Mar often has sand embedded in the grain, requiring extra cleaning before sanding compared to bluff-top or inland pieces.

Restore or replace

When restoration is the better call

Quality teak furniture is built to outlast several finishes. The grey surface that makes a set look finished is a fraction of a millimetre deep; below it the timber is usually sound and dense.

Restoration also preserves what replacement cannot: the joinery of well-made older pieces, dimensions that fit a specific space, and matching across a set that is no longer manufactured. In Del Mar that matters most on built-in benches and custom tables.

Replacement is genuinely right sometimes — widespread rot, failed structural joinery, or pieces that were low-grade to begin with. We say so rather than sell a finish onto wood that cannot hold it.

Hardware and details

The parts of a restoration nobody photographs

The finish is what people see. These are the details that decide whether it still looks right in two years.

Fasteners

Corroded screws and bolts are replaced in stainless. Reusing them guarantees fresh black staining within a season.

Glue lines

Old adhesive that has let go is cleaned out entirely before re-gluing; fresh glue over failed glue simply fails again.

Feet and end grain

End grain drinks water many times faster than face grain, so feet get extra coats and, where sensible, pads.

Slat gaps

The narrow sides of slats are the hardest surface to reach and the fastest place a cheap job reveals itself.

Moving parts

Recliner mechanisms and folding hinges are stripped, cleaned and lubricated while the piece is apart.

Service menu

Choose the level of work your teak needs.

Not everything needs a full restoration. Being told which tier you are actually in is usually the most valuable part of the estimate.

Tier one — clean and coat

For teak that still sheds water but has flattened in colour. Wash, dry, one saturating maintenance coat.

Teak Cleaning Del Mar

Tier two — light refinish

Silvered but smooth. Cleaned, sanded fine, brightened and finished in two coats. The most common job we do.

Teak Refinishing Del Mar

Tier three — full restoration

Rough, eroded, stained or blotchy. Multi-grit sanding back to sound wood, then the protection rebuilt from scratch.

Teak Restoration Del Mar

Tier four — restoration plus carpentry

Neglected pieces with loose joints, splits or missing slats. Bench work first, then finishing.

Teak Maintenance Del Mar

Aftercare

Keeping restored teak looking right

Restoration resets the clock; maintenance decides how slowly it runs down. The routine takes minutes.

Rinse regularly

Plain water removes grit before it abrades the surface. No pressure washers, ever.

Mild soap only

Diluted dish soap and a soft brush along the grain handles almost everything.

Lift standing water

Move cushions, planters and trays occasionally so the surface underneath can dry.

Shade the worst piece

A cover over the hardest-hit item measurably extends the interval for the whole set.

Refresh, do not rescue

A maintenance coat on a sound surface costs a fraction of a full restoration later.

Projects in Del Mar

Recent Del Mar Teak Projects

Beachfront Lounger Restoration

A set of teak loungers steps from the sand had visible sand abrasion embedded in the grain; fully cleaned, sanded, and refinished on-site.

Bluff-Top Dining Table Refinish

A teak dining table on a wind-exposed bluff patio showed early surface checking; restored and resealed with attention to the drying effects of sustained wind.

Fairgrounds-Area Patio Set Refresh

An inland teak patio set near the racetrack area had faded significantly from sun exposure but retained sound structure, needing sanding and a fresh UV-protective finish.

Cottage Deck Bench Repair

A built-in teak bench on a beachfront cottage deck was restored after sand and salt buildup had dulled its finish over several seasons.

Our approach

Restoration as conservation, not resurfacing.

01

Diagnosis before product

Grey, blotchy, sticky and rough are four different problems. Treating them the same way is why finishes fail early.

02

The joinery comes first

A beautiful finish over a loose frame lasts one season. Structure is corrected before anything decorative happens.

03

Climate-appropriate protection

We use marine-grade sealers built to survive Del Mar's beachfront salt exposure, coastal fog and afternoon sun off the water.

04

A plan you can keep

We leave every Del Mar client a realistic maintenance interval for their exposure, not a generic annual reminder.

Frequently Asked

Teak restoration in Del Mar answers to the questions we hear most.

Blowing sand near the shoreline gets embedded in the wood grain and must be fully cleared before sanding, unlike bluff-top or inland furniture.
