Heat, dry air and Ipe in Irvine
Away from the coast, Irvine decks trade salt for heat. Long, dry summers pull moisture out of the boards, and Ipe — which arrives at a fairly low moisture content already — shrinks slightly and then swells again with the first real rain.
That seasonal movement is the source of most of the surface checking we see inland: shallow hairline splits running with the grain, usually on the sunniest boards. They are cosmetic at first, but they hold dirt and water, so they are worth sealing before they deepen.
An inland refinish is therefore as much about closing the surface as it is about color. Getting oil into the checks matters more than the number of coats on the flat.
Why Irvine's Sun Turns Ipe Gray So Quickly
Ipe is dense and naturally weather-resistant, but Irvine's UV index climbs high for months at a time with almost no marine layer to soften it. Remove the biology
Mildew, algae and the black spotting under planters are living, not cosmetic. They get treated before any abrasive touches the wood.
Open the grain
Ipe's tight pores close up under weathering. Correct grit sequencing opens them just enough to accept oil without leaving scratch marks.
Balance the tone
Brightener resets the pH and pulls the iron staining out from around screws so the whole deck reads one color, not a patchwork.
Feed the wood
Penetrating oil chosen for your exposure, applied in thin coats. Ipe takes far less product than pine — over-applying is the classic mistake.
Document the finish
We record the exact product and grit sequence used, so the next maintenance coat matches rather than fights what is already there.
What each finish costs you in upkeep
Richer colour always means a shorter interval. Natural-tone oils show the wood at its best and want refreshing soonest. Pigmented and UV-fortified versions hold longer but read slightly more uniform and less lively.
Leaving Ipe bare is the cheapest ongoing option and entirely valid, provided the surface has been sanded smooth so it silvers evenly rather than patchily and never splinters underfoot.
