Ipe Deck Refinishing Irvine

The premier Ipe refinishing crew in Irvine, Orange County.

Irvine's master-planned neighborhoods were built for outdoor living, and many of them feature Ipe decking around pools, spas, and backyard patios. Unlike coastal cities, Irvine's climate is defined by long stretches of dry heat and intense UV exposure rather than salt air, which pushes Ipe boards to gray, crack, and check faster than owners expect. My Teak Pro sands, cleans, and re-oils these surfaces so they hold their rich brown tone through another Irvine summer.

Many Irvine properties sit inside HOA-governed villages such as Northwood, Westpark, and Quail Hill, where exterior standards are enforced and uniform deck appearance matters for resale and community approval.

We're the same veteran-owned crew behind Irvine teak restoration and outdoor furniture refinishing. Browse recent projects in our project gallery or request a free estimate for your Irvine Ipe deck.

Heat, dry air and Ipe in Irvine

Away from the coast, Irvine decks trade salt for heat. Long, dry summers pull moisture out of the boards, and Ipe — which arrives at a fairly low moisture content already — shrinks slightly and then swells again with the first real rain.

That seasonal movement is the source of most of the surface checking we see inland: shallow hairline splits running with the grain, usually on the sunniest boards. They are cosmetic at first, but they hold dirt and water, so they are worth sealing before they deepen.

An inland refinish is therefore as much about closing the surface as it is about color. Getting oil into the checks matters more than the number of coats on the flat.

Why Ipe Decks Turn Gray

Why Irvine's Sun Turns Ipe Gray So Quickly

Ipe is dense and naturally weather-resistant, but Irvine's UV index climbs high for months at a time with almost no marine layer to soften it. That relentless sun breaks down the wood's natural oils at the surface, leaving a chalky gray patina within a year or two if the deck isn't maintained. Pool decks and south-facing patios fade fastest because reflected light and heat compound the exposure.

Scope

The Ipe surfaces we are asked about most

The craft is the same across all of them; access and detailing are what change the day.

Main deck field

Machine work, straightforward, and where most of the square footage sits.

Stairs and treads

Hand work, safety-critical, and the highest-wear element on any deck.

Fascia and skirting

Vertical, highly visible, and usually more weathered at the bottom than the top.

Rail caps and posts

Constant hand contact, so the finish choice here is about feel as much as looks.

Docks and gangways

Permanently damp and slip-critical. Product selection is driven by traction, not colour.

Method

Preparation is ninety percent of an Ipe finish.

01

Read the deck

Ipe is dense enough that finish failure is almost always a preparation story. We find out what was on it before and why it let go.

02

Remove the biology

Mildew, algae and the black spotting under planters are living, not cosmetic. They get treated before any abrasive touches the wood.

03

Open the grain

Ipe's tight pores close up under weathering. Correct grit sequencing opens them just enough to accept oil without leaving scratch marks.

04

Balance the tone

Brightener resets the pH and pulls the iron staining out from around screws so the whole deck reads one color, not a patchwork.

05

Feed the wood

Penetrating oil chosen for your exposure, applied in thin coats. Ipe takes far less product than pine — over-applying is the classic mistake.

06

Document the finish

We record the exact product and grit sequence used, so the next maintenance coat matches rather than fights what is already there.

Trade-offs

What each finish costs you in upkeep

Richer colour always means a shorter interval. Natural-tone oils show the wood at its best and want refreshing soonest. Pigmented and UV-fortified versions hold longer but read slightly more uniform and less lively.

Leaving Ipe bare is the cheapest ongoing option and entirely valid, provided the surface has been sanded smooth so it silvers evenly rather than patchily and never splinters underfoot.

How we work

What working with us is actually like.

A fixed written price

The number on the estimate is the number on the invoice unless you change the scope. No day-rate creep.

One crew, start to finish

The people who quote the job are the people who sand it. Nothing gets handed to a subcontractor mid-week.

We say no to bad jobs

If a deck is past finishing we will tell you, in writing, rather than sell you a coat of oil that fails in a season.

Neighbours in mind

Dust containment, contained wash water, tidy staging and no early-morning machine noise.

Product transparency

You are told exactly what goes on your wood and why, and you keep the spec for future maintenance.

We come back

Maintenance reminders on your schedule, not sales calls. Most of our work is repeat clients.
