How to restore weathered teak furniture
Grey teak is almost always surface oxidation, not damage. Here is the full sequence used to bring it back, and the points where the job usually goes wrong.
Start by working out what you are actually looking at
The silver-grey surface on weathered teak is oxidised wood fibre, typically a fraction of a millimetre deep. Underneath, well-made teak is usually sound. Before planning any work, check three things: does water still bead on the surface, is the texture rough or still smooth, and do the joints move when you push on the frame.
If the frame is solid and the greying is uniform, this is a finishing job. If joints move, slats flex or you find soft spots, plan repair work first. Finish applied over a failing structure hides a problem for one season and no longer.
Clean before you sand, not after
Cleaning removes the loose oxidised layer, mildew and embedded grit. Sanding a dirty surface simply drives that grit deeper and clogs abrasives immediately. Use a dedicated two-part teak cleaner or a mild soap solution and a soft brush, always working along the grain.
Avoid pressure washing. It looks efficient and it does clean, but the jet erodes the soft early-wood between the harder grain lines and leaves a furrowed texture that then has to be sanded flat, removing far more material than necessary.
Sand through grits, and stop at the right one
Work up through progressively finer abrasives rather than trying to do everything with one grade. A typical progression starts coarse enough to level the eroded surface and finishes fine enough to close the grain without polishing it.
Stopping too coarse leaves a surface that drinks finish unevenly and looks blotchy. Going too fine burnishes the wood so oil cannot penetrate at all. Between those two extremes there is a lot of room, which is why the result depends more on consistency than on any particular number.
Choose the finish for the exposure, not the photo
Penetrating oils give the richest colour and never peel, but on a fully exposed piece they need refreshing on the shortest cycle. Protective sealers with UV inhibitors hold longer and read slightly more uniform. Leaving the wood bare after cleaning and sanding is a legitimate choice if you want an even silver rather than a honey tone.
Whatever you choose, apply thin coats and wipe back the excess. Thick applications sit on the surface, stay tacky in the heat and collect dust.
When to hand it over
Small pieces in fair condition are a reasonable weekend project. Large sets, built-in benches, tables with deep staining and anything with loose joinery are where a professional restoration pays for itself, mostly in preparation quality and in not sanding away material that cannot be replaced.
Tools and materials worth having ready
Restoration goes badly far more often from missing kit than from lack of skill. At minimum you want a soft-bristle brush, a dedicated two-part teak cleaner, abrasives in at least three grades, a random-orbit sander for flat areas, sanding blocks or pads for the shaped work, lint-free cloths and the finish you have chosen.
Skip the wire brush and steel wool entirely. Fragments left in the grain rust within weeks and produce black spotting that has to be sanded out later, which is exactly the material you were trying to preserve.

Common mistakes, and what they cost
Almost all of the remedial work professionals are called out for comes from four decisions: pressure washing, skipping grits, over-applying oil, and finishing over damp wood. Each is easy to avoid and expensive to correct after the fact.
Over-application is the most common. Teak already contains its own oils and accepts far less than people expect. Anything the wood does not take stays on the surface, never cures, goes tacky in heat and collects dust — and it then has to be dissolved off rather than sanded, because it clogs abrasives instantly.
Coastal versus inland pieces
Salt air keeps surfaces damp for longer and adds an abrasive component, so coastal furniture usually needs the mildew and salt-film step taken seriously before any sanding starts. Inland pieces are more often about heat, UV and fine surface checking from humidity swings.
That difference should change the finish you choose, not just the effort you put into prep. Full-sun inland pieces benefit from stronger UV protection; shaded coastal pieces hold a softer oil for surprisingly long.
How long the result should last
On a fully exposed piece, expect roughly nine to eighteen months from a penetrating oil before the colour begins flattening, and longer from a sealer. Covered or shaded pieces routinely go two to three years.
Judge by the water test rather than the calendar: when water stops beading on exposed faces, the protection is spent and a maintenance coat is due. Recoating a sound surface is a short job; recovering an eroded one is a full restoration again.

Can I restore teak in place on a patio? Yes, and most professional work is done that way. It needs masking of surrounding stone, glass and planting, plus dust containment, but nothing has to be crated or transported.
