Signs your Ipe deck is due

Not every grey deck needs work this month. These are the indicators that actually matter.

Water soaks straight in

The most reliable single test. No beading means no protection left in the surface.

Fibrous, dull grey surface

Degraded lignin at the top of the grain. Reversible, but it means the oil went some time ago.

Splinters underfoot

Raised grain from repeated wet-dry cycling. This is the safety threshold, not a cosmetic one.

Dark rings and halos

Iron reacting with Ipe's extractives, or tannin drawn out under planters. Both lift with brightener.

Visible traffic lanes

A pale path where the finish has worn through first. Spot-coating now avoids a full refinish later.

Local conditions

Salt air and the Laguna Beach deck surface

Airborne salt is the variable that separates a Laguna Beach deck from an identical one a few miles inland. Salt is hygroscopic: it pulls water out of the air and holds it against the boards long after the morning marine layer has cleared. The top of each board stays damp for hours, and that slow wet-dry cycling is what tears a finish apart from underneath.

Ipe survives it better than almost any other decking because of its density — around 1,100 kg per cubic metre, tight enough that water struggles to get in at all. What fails is the oil sitting in the outer fibres, not the timber. That distinction matters, because it means a Laguna Beach deck that looks ruined is usually a refinishing job rather than a replacement.

Practically, oceanfront decks here want a maintenance coat roughly twice as often as sheltered ones. Rinsing salt off with fresh water once a week does more for the finish than any product upgrade.

Ipe Deck Refinishing Laguna Beach

The premier Ipe refinishing crew in Laguna Beach, Orange County.

Laguna Beach's hillside canyons and oceanfront cliffs make for spectacular outdoor living, but they also expose Ipe decking to a punishing combination of salt spray, marine layer moisture, and intense midday sun once the fog burns off. Homes tucked into Emerald Bay, Victoria Beach, and the Village all deal with this exposure differently depending on elevation and orientation, and My Teak Pro adjusts its restoration approach to match. The goal is always the same: strip away the weathered gray surface and bring back Ipe's natural depth of color.

Because so many Laguna Beach homes are built on steep hillsides with narrow access roads, deck restoration work here often requires careful planning for material and equipment access that flatter inland properties simply don't need.

Our Ipe Restoration Process

Six-step process, hand-finished on-site.

01

Inspection

On-site assessment of every board — condition, exposure, prior finish and any repairs needed.

02

Deep Cleaning

Professional cleaning removes mildew, salt residue, sunscreen, oils and years of environmental buildup.

03

Sanding

Multi-grit sanding down to fresh wood — the oxidized gray layer is removed, exposing rich color below.

04

Brightening

A wood brightener neutralizes tannins and evens the tone across every board for a uniform finish.

05

Premium Oil Finish

Marine-grade Ipe oil is hand-applied in multiple coats, penetrating deep to seal against sun and salt.

06

Final Inspection

Every square foot is inspected, edges detailed, and the site left cleaner than we found it.

Finish options

Choosing a finish for dense hardwood

Ipe is too dense for most coatings to key into, which rules out a lot of what is sold for decking. In practice there are three honest options.

Penetrating hardwood oil

The default. It feeds the outer fibres, keeps the grain visible and can never peel because there is no film to fail.

UV-fortified oil

The same chemistry with added pigment and inhibitors. Holds colour noticeably longer on unshaded and ocean-facing decks.

Clean and let it silver

Sanded smooth, sealed lightly or not at all, and allowed to weather evenly. Lowest maintenance and a deliberate architectural look.

Project Types

Ipe Deck Projects We Complete in Laguna Beach

Ipe Cliffside Decks

We restore dramatic ocean-facing decks perched above Laguna's coves, treating the heavier salt spray exposure these elevated positions receive.

Ipe Canyon Patios

Hillside homes tucked into Laguna Canyon often have shaded Ipe patios that battle marine-layer moisture and mildew rather than direct sun damage.

Ipe Hot Tub and Spa Decks

Many Laguna Beach properties integrate spa decking into hillside outdoor living areas, which we refinish to handle both water splash and salt air.

Ipe Exterior Stairways

Steep lots throughout Laguna Beach rely on exterior Ipe stairs connecting multiple levels, and we prioritize slip resistance when refinishing these high-use surfaces.

Ipe Ocean-View Balconies

Homes along Victoria Beach and similar bluff areas often feature cantilevered Ipe balconies that we restore with careful attention to wind and salt exposure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ipe deck refinishing in Laguna Beach.

The marine layer keeps moisture on shaded or canyon-facing decks longer than direct sun can dry it out, which creates conditions favorable to mildew even in a generally sunny climate.
