Teak Restoration Point Loma

Restoring teak dining sets, loungers, and boat teak for the peninsula's bluff homes, harbor slips, and Sunset Cliffs decks.
Furniture is most of the work but rarely all of it. These are the fixed and functional pieces we are asked to bring in line with a restored set.
Restored in place with surrounding stone, render and planting fully masked before any sanding starts.
Vertical exterior joinery where the finish fails first at the top rail and the bottom edge.
Constant wetting demands a different specification from anything on a dry terrace.
High, awkward and rarely maintained, which is why they are usually the greyest wood on a property.
Cockpit tables, rails, swim platforms and trim finished to marine standards in the slip.
Teak, ipe and mahogany decks across Point Loma, cleaned, flattened and re-oiled to match the furniture on them.
Point Loma is a narrow peninsula wedged between San Diego Bay and the open Pacific, and that geography means teak furniture here gets hit from two directions at once. Homes along Sunset Cliffs Boulevard face raw ocean wind and salt spray, while properties tucked closer to Shelter Island and the bay side deal with a calmer but still humid marine environment tied to the working harbor below.
Because so much of Point Loma's waterfront is tied to boating β Shelter Island Yacht Basin, the Southwestern Yacht Club, and countless private docks along Rosecrans β we spend a lot of time on boat teak here as well as patio furniture: cockpit tables, swim step treads, and companionway trim that see far more sun and saltwater cycling than a typical deck chair.
The bluff-top neighborhoods near Cabrillo National Monument and the older Loma Portal homes closer to the Naval base each have their own wind exposure, and we've noticed that furniture set on the exposed western bluffs grays noticeably faster than pieces just a few streets over on the bay side near Talbot Street.
Point Loma's older housing stock, much of it built mid-century with additions over the decades, often has narrow side-yard access or hillside stairs down to lower patios, so our on-site process is built around working within those constraints rather than requiring furniture be hauled up to street level.
Whether it's a teak dining set on a Sunset Cliffs bluff or the teak cockpit sole on a sailboat moored at Kona Kai, we adjust our sanding and finishing approach to how much direct salt exposure the wood actually sees.
We work with homeowners and boat owners throughout Point Loma, from Sunset Cliffs to Shelter Island, and coordinate marina gate access when restoring teak on docked vessels.
Two identical-looking sets can be very different jobs. This is the order we work through on site, and what changes the price.
Thick, tight-grained teak takes restoration repeatedly. Thin, sappy stock has far less material to give.
A failed film finish adds a stripping stage before anything else can start, and that is real time.
Slat undersides and inner rails tell the truth about how a piece has been stored and maintained.
Corroded fasteners are replaced during restoration; leaving them guarantees fresh staining within a season.
Masking a glass-railed terrace above a pool takes longer than a lawn, and that is quoted honestly.

Furniture facing the open Pacific along Sunset Cliffs Boulevard takes a steady beating from onshore wind and salt spray, and we recommend more frequent rinsing and inspection for these pieces than for bay-side patios that are somewhat sheltered by the peninsula's own landmass.
Boat teak around Shelter Island and the harbor marinas has a different problem set: constant wet-dry cycling from wake and rain, plus UV exposure with almost no shade, which tends to bleach and roughen the grain faster than stationary patio furniture.
For hillside homes near Cabrillo National Monument, we also check drainage carefully, since runoff funneling down steep lots can pool around teak furniture legs and cause the uneven dark staining we often see on lower bluff terraces.
We work throughout the communities surrounding Point Loma, often on the same trip.
Usually yes. The limiting factor is structure, not appearance.
Read guideSun does not just fade colour. It breaks down the material that holds wood fibres together, and it degrades the finish protecting them.
Read guideThe decision is structural first and financial second. Appearance should not drive it at all.
