How UV exposure damages outdoor wood

Sun does not just fade colour. It breaks down the material that holds wood fibres together, and it degrades the finish protecting them.

Two kinds of damage at once

UV attacks lignin in the wood surface, loosening fibres and producing the familiar grey. Simultaneously it degrades the binders in most finishes, which is why a coating can look chalky and lose its water resistance long before it looks worn.

Heat compounds both. Dark surfaces in direct sun run far hotter than ambient temperature, softening some finishes and driving moisture out of the timber.

Why exposure direction predicts failure

South and west-facing surfaces take the longest and most intense sun of the day, so they fail first, often years ahead of north-facing components on the same structure. Tabletops, deck boards and handrail tops fail before vertical faces for the same reason.

Reflected light adds to the total. Pale stone, water and glass all bounce UV back onto surfaces that appear sheltered.

What actually helps

Finishes containing UV inhibitors slow surface degradation meaningfully. Physical shade helps more: an umbrella, pergola or breathable cover over the most exposed piece changes the maintenance interval more than any product choice.

Rotating furniture occasionally also evens out exposure across a set, which keeps the whole group looking consistent rather than having two chairs that never match.

What UV actually breaks

Ultraviolet light degrades lignin, the natural binder holding wood fibres together. The freed cellulose fibres at the very surface scatter light, which is what reads as grey, and rain then rinses them away to expose a fresh layer.

It is a continuous surface process rather than something working into the timber, which is exactly why the damage is shallow and reversible.

Reflected and indirect exposure

Direct sun is only part of the load. Water, pale stone, render and glass balustrades all reflect UV back upward, so undersides of armrests and table aprons weather far more than orientation alone suggests.

This is why shading a piece helps less than expected in bright coastal settings, and why sets that look identically placed can weather at very different rates.

Protection that actually works

  • Finishes with UV inhibitors, refreshed before they fail
  • Lighter tones on pieces in full sun — dark surfaces run hotter
  • Physical shade over the single most exposed piece
  • Rotating movable furniture through the season so wear evens out

Heat as the second factor

UV and heat arrive together and do different things. Heat softens oils, makes films brittle and drives moisture out of the timber, which is what opens the fine checking along the grain of long-exposed slats.

Surface temperature on a dark oiled top in full afternoon sun runs far above air temperature, so pieces on hot hardscape often need shorter intervals than the same pieces on a lawn.

Common questions

Do UV inhibitors really work? Yes, measurably — but they are consumed over time, which is why a finish that is never refreshed eventually stops protecting.

Does a darker finish protect better? It blocks more light but runs hotter, which shortens the interval on pieces in full sun. It is a trade-off, not an upgrade.

Is indirect light enough to grey wood? On bright coastal sites, yes. Reflected UV from water, glass and pale stone weathers undersides surprisingly quickly.
