When restoration is the better call
Quality teak furniture is built to outlast several finishes. The grey surface that makes a set look finished is a fraction of a millimetre deep; below it the timber is usually sound and dense.
Restoration also preserves what replacement cannot: the joinery of well-made older pieces, dimensions that fit a specific space, and matching across a set that is no longer manufactured. In Corona del Mar that matters most on built-in benches and custom tables.
Replacement is genuinely right sometimes — widespread rot, failed structural joinery, or pieces that were low-grade to begin with. We say so rather than sell a finish onto wood that cannot hold it.
Four stages of teak weathering
Knowing which stage you are at makes the estimate conversation much shorter, and often much cheaper than expected.
Stage 1 — Dulling
Colour flattening, water still beading. A clean and a maintenance coat is enough.
Stage 2 — Silvering
Grey across exposed faces, surface still smooth. Clean, light sand, refinish.
Stage 3 — Erosion
Rough texture, raised grain, some spotting. Full multi-grit sanding, then protection rebuilt.
Stage 4 — Neglect
Deep staining, checking, loose joints. Still usually restorable, but budget for carpentry.
Teak Restoration for the Village and the Bluffs
Corona del Mar sits at a unique meeting point — the open Pacific along Ocean Boulevard on one side, and the calmer, boat-heavy waters near the Newport Harbor entrance on the other. Teak furniture in this small, upscale village experiences very different aging depending on which side of town it sits.
Bluff-top homes overlooking Big Corona and Little Corona beaches take direct, unfiltered ocean wind, and we see teak dining sets and loungers on these decks develop a heavier, faster silver-gray patina than pieces just a few blocks inland near the Corona del Mar village shops.
Because so many homes here were built in the mid-century and have since been remodeled with contemporary outdoor living spaces, we often find older teak furniture that's been in the family for years sitting next to newer built-in teak elements like shower decks or entry benches.
The village's narrow lots and close-set Craftsman and Cape Cod-style homes also mean furniture is frequently placed on small patios with limited airflow, which changes how quickly moisture evaporates after coastal fog rolls through in the morning.

The parts of a restoration nobody photographs

Fasteners
Corroded screws and bolts are replaced in stainless. Reusing them guarantees fresh black staining within a season.
Glue lines
Old adhesive that has let go is cleaned out entirely before re-gluing; fresh glue over failed glue simply fails again.
Feet and end grain
End grain drinks water many times faster than face grain, so feet get extra coats and, where sensible, pads.
Slat gaps
The narrow sides of slats are the hardest surface to reach and the fastest place a cheap job reveals itself.
Moving parts
Recliner mechanisms and folding hinges are stripped, cleaned and lubricated while the piece is apart.
Hand-finished
Every grain inspected, sanded and sealed by a master craftsman.

Diagnose the surface
Grey, blotchy and sticky are three different failures with three different fixes. We identify which one you have first.

Kill the biology
Mildew and algae in shaded joints are living, not cosmetic. They are treated before abrasives touch the wood.

Remove, do not bleach
Staining is lifted with the correct chemistry rather than chlorine, which breaks down fibre and lightens unevenly.

Sand along the grain
Cross-grain scratches show through any oil finish. Every pass follows the grain, including the awkward edges.

Test before you coat
A sample area confirms tone and absorption on your actual wood before the whole set is committed to a product.
- 06
Record the specification
Product, grit sequence and coat count are logged so the next maintenance visit matches instead of fighting it.
