What salt air does to teak in Coronado
Airborne salt is hygroscopic: it pulls moisture out of the air and holds it against the wood long after the last rain. On Coronado terraces that means teak spends far more hours genuinely damp than the rainfall figures suggest, and damp surfaces oxidise faster than dry ones.
Salt crystals are also abrasive. As they dry and are wiped, brushed or blown across a surface they micro-scratch the finish, opening paths for water into the grain. This is why coastal teak often loses colour first along armrests and table edges, where hands and cloths move most.
None of this is structural. Teak's natural oils and dense, interlocked grain are exactly why boatbuilders chose it. What salt shortens is the life of the finish, not the life of the wood.
