Ipe next to the other hardwoods we restore
Species behave differently under the same sun, and the method changes accordingly.
Ipe
Dense, tight-grained, takes finish sparingly. Prep-led work with careful grit sequencing.
Teak
Naturally oily and forgiving. Silvers gracefully and comes back with less effort than any other species.
Cumaru and garapa
Similar density to Ipe with more colour variation. Same method, more attention to blending tone.
Mahogany and sapele
Richer colour, less durable outdoors. These genuinely want a film-forming protective finish.
Cedar and redwood
Soft and easily over-sanded. Gentle abrasion only, and a very different product spec.
Choosing a finish for dense hardwood
Ipe is too dense for most coatings to key into, which rules out a lot of what is sold for decking. In practice there are three honest options.
Penetrating hardwood oil
The default. It feeds the outer fibres, keeps the grain visible and can never peel because there is no film to fail.
UV-fortified oil
The same chemistry with added pigment and inhibitors. Holds colour noticeably longer on unshaded and ocean-facing decks.
Clean and let it silver
Sanded smooth, sealed lightly or not at all, and allowed to weather evenly. Lowest maintenance and a deliberate architectural look.

We chase out the fuzz, the checking and the traffic lanes until the surface is uniform under raking light.
Finish and detail
Oil on the field boards, hand-worked into fascia, stair risers and rail caps where the eye lands first.
