Ipe Deck Restoration in Pacific Palisades

Perched along coastal bluffs and tucked into dry canyon hillsides, Pacific Palisades estates rely on Ipe decking to withstand both intense ocean-facing sun and the parched, fire-prone dryness of the surrounding hills.

Ipe Deck Refinishing Pacific Palisades

The premier Ipe refinishing crew in Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles County.

Pacific Palisades sits in an unusual position for Southern California decking: close enough to the ocean for salt-laden wind and afternoon glare off the water, yet built largely into canyon and bluff terrain that runs hot and dry for much of the year. Ocean-view terraces on bluff-top properties take a steady beating from wind and UV, while canyon-facing decks tucked into hillside brush deal with extreme summer dryness and heat that pulls moisture out of Ipe far faster than coastal fog-belt neighborhoods experience.

Many Pacific Palisades properties are large hillside or bluff estates with expansive Ipe terraces designed for unobstructed ocean views, often built on multiple elevated levels connected by exterior stairs. The dry brush terrain surrounding much of the community means homeowners are especially mindful of fire-conscious landscaping and materials, and Ipe's natural fire resistance is one reason it's such a popular choice here.

Benefits of Restoration for Bluff and Canyon Properties

Restoring Ipe on a Palisades property means addressing both dryness and sun exposure at once. We remove the brittle, checked surface layer and apply an oil formulated to penetrate deeply and resist rapid moisture loss, which matters more here than almost anywhere else in coastal LA given how dry the surrounding hills get. For ocean-view terraces, we also select finishes that hold up to steady onshore wind without streaking or uneven wear.

01

A deck you can walk barefoot on

Eroded early wood leaves a fibrous surface that catches skin. Abrading it flat is the single biggest comfort change.

02

Surface water that runs off

A saturated finish keeps Pacific Palisades rain and irrigation spray sitting on top of the boards instead of soaking into end grain.

03

Even color across every board

Brightening pulls the tannin and iron staining out so replacement boards and originals read as one deck.

04

A shorter next job

Once the surface is sound, staying ahead of it is a maintenance coat rather than a full restoration.

Products

What to keep in the garage for your deck

You do not need much, and the cheap items matter more than the expensive ones.

A stiff-bristle broom

Not wire. Along the grain, weekly. This is the single highest-value maintenance habit.

A pH-neutral hardwood cleaner

Diluted, with dwell time. Nothing caustic and nothing containing chlorine bleach.

Furniture pads

Non-metallic feet under every leg. They prevent both the iron staining and the wear rings.

A litre of the matching oil

We leave you the spec. Spot-treating a high-wear lane at six months delays the whole refinish.

A moisture meter, optional

Cheap, and it takes the guesswork out of deciding whether the deck is dry enough to coat.

How the work runs

What a restoration week actually looks like.

01

Day zero — walkthrough

We measure the deck, photograph problem areas, test moisture in a few boards and agree the scope in writing before anyone starts.

02

Board triage and carpentry

Cupped, split or fastener-damaged boards get flipped, re-fixed or swapped first. Sanding a deck with loose boards only hides the issue.

03

Strip and neutralize

Old film finishes and mill glaze come off chemically where sanding alone would gouge the surface, then the wood is neutralized and rinsed.

04

Progressive abrasion

Coarse to fine in stages, with hand work along railings, stair noses and anywhere a machine cannot reach flat.

05

Saturation coats

Oil goes on wet-on-wet until the boards stop drinking, then the excess is wiped back so nothing sits on the surface to go sticky.

06

Cure and handover

We stay off the deck through the cure window, return to buff any raised spots, and leave you a written care schedule.

Diagnosis

Three tests you can do this afternoon

Before calling anyone, these three checks will tell you most of what a Pacific Palisades estimator would.

The cup of water

Pour it on the most exposed board. Beads and sits: fine. Soaks and darkens: book.

The palm test

Run a hand along the grain. Chalky residue on your palm is oxidised fibre coming away.

The hidden edge

Compare an exposed face to a board end under the rail. That colour gap is exactly what you have lost.

What we take on

Beyond the deck boards.

Board replacement & repair

Sourcing, milling and swapping damaged Ipe so the repair disappears into the run instead of announcing itself.

Railing & stair refinishing

Handrails, cable rail posts and stair treads take the most contact and weather differently from the field boards.

Stain & tannin removal

Rust halos around fasteners, planter rings, barbecue grease and sunscreen shadow all come out with the right chemistry.

Pool & spa surrounds

Chlorine splash-out and constant wet traffic need a finish specified differently from a dry upper terrace.

Pre-sale refresh

A fast turnaround package for listings — clean, light sand and a single saturating coat before photography.

Rooftop & balcony decks

Access-limited work with hand tools and containment, common on multi-level and HOA properties.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ipe deck refinishing in Pacific Palisades.

Much of the Palisades sits in canyon terrain that experiences dry Santa Ana wind conditions and less marine layer coverage than lower-lying coastal neighborhoods, which pulls moisture out of the wood faster.
