Teak oil vs. teak sealer: which finish is right?
Oils look richer and want more attention. Sealers hold longer and read more uniform. The right answer depends on exposure and on how often you want to think about it.
What each product actually does
A penetrating teak oil soaks into the top layer of wood and stays there. It does not form a film, so it cannot peel or flake; when it wears, it wears evenly and invisibly. That is its great practical advantage.
A sealer forms a thin protective layer at the surface, usually carrying UV inhibitors. It resists water and staining more effectively and lasts longer between applications, but because it is a film it can eventually show wear at high-contact points.
Appearance
Oil gives the deepest, warmest presentation of the grain. If the goal is furniture that looks like the showroom piece, oil is usually the answer.
Sealers tend to look slightly more even and a little less deep. On large expanses such as decking, that uniformity is often preferable.
Maintenance interval
Exposure drives this more than product choice. In full sun with salt air, an oiled surface asks for attention on a much shorter cycle than the same piece under cover. Sealers extend the interval but do not eliminate it.
The useful habit is the water test: when water stops beading on exposed faces, the protection is spent regardless of which product is on there.
Switching from one to the other
Going from oil to sealer, or between incompatible products, requires stripping and sanding back to bare wood. Applying a sealer over residual oil is the most common cause of patchy, slow-curing finishes.
If you do not know what is currently on a piece, assume it needs full preparation.
Application differences that matter
Oil is applied wet, allowed to soak, then wiped back within its working window. The wipe is not optional — it is what separates a rich finish from a tacky one.
Sealers are built in thin, even coats with proper flash-off time between them. They are less forgiving of dust and wind during cure, which is why finishing is scheduled around the weather rather than the diary.
Switching from one to the other
Going from oil to a sealer requires the surface to be genuinely clean and dry, because sealers will not bond reliably over residual oil. In practice that means a full clean and a sand back to bare wood.
Going the other way is simpler but still needs the old film removed completely, chemically rather than by sanding through it, since sanding drives fragments of film into open grain where they show as light flecks under oil.
Cost over five years
Oil is cheaper per application and more frequent. A sealer costs more per cycle and is needed less often. Over five years on an exposed set the totals land closer together than most people assume, so choose on appearance and maintenance appetite rather than price.
The expensive outcome is neither product — it is letting the surface go past the point where a maintenance coat will do, which turns a half-day refresh into a full restoration.
Which to choose for common situations
- Full-sun exposed terrace, low maintenance appetite — sealer
- Shaded courtyard set, wants maximum depth of grain — oil
- Dining table with heavy use and spills — sealer or a harder oil schedule
- Boat and dock teak — marine-specification products, shorter intervals
- Architecturally silver look — clean, sand, leave bare
Common questions
Can I put oil over an old sealer? Not reliably. The sealer film has to be removed first, or the oil sits on top and never cures properly.
Which lasts longer outdoors? A quality sealer generally outlasts a penetrating oil in full exposure, at the cost of a slightly less natural depth of grain.
Does oil cause mildew? Oil itself does not, but an over-applied, uncured surface holds dust and moisture, which mildew then colonises. Wiping back excess prevents it.
